Almost every nation has its own national epic, which is based on old folk tales and wisdoms. They each give their own version of how the nation and the world was born. And they present the heroes of the nation.

Kalevala
The Finnish national epic is called Kalevala. It is a cavalcade of stories of Finnish heroes, collected by the author Elias Lönnrot from the singers of oral poetry. Most of the singers were women and the basis of Kalevala can be found in their poems. Kalevala tells about men who long for the love of a woman, in vain. It is a sad story of heroes who can do anything in the world, but who are incapable with love. This is what makes Kalevala so essentially Finnish.

But not just Finnish! Elias Lönnrot edited a lot out of the Kalevala. Everything that didn't fit his idea about Finnishness. There is one particular hero that Lönnrot left unmentioned. A man with the knowledge and skills of two nations, the man who connects Finnish and Chinese ancient mythologies...

The bride however liked the smith and had advised him to forge a magic lock into the Sampo. Only a son of his own flesh and blood would be able to open it. So the smith was given his bride, and he took her far into the South, to the Province of Shansi where he was from. There they had a son...

Sampo remained in the North, but was soon stolen. The Chinese prophecies tells about a creature living in the swamps up North. It has waited for its time to come. It has waited for the birth of iron and the Sampo forged by the smith, which can bring heaven on earth. Or hell. This demon will try to bring hell on earth, because in hell the demon will live forever.
But the smith has a son, a hero who has the knowledge and the skills of two nations. He will rise up against the demon. Will he win? That the prophecy does not foretell...
